The African Federation, Inc. (AFI), in collaboration with Immigrant Development Center (IDC), hosted a conference of African-serving organizations in the Greater Minneapolis-St. Paul area. The conference was held on Saturday, February 21, 2009, at the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, 2105 First Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN, 55404 from 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm. The Conference promoted AFI’s National African Diaspora Mobilization Project (NADMP), funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the Four Freedoms Fund (FFF), which aims to establish a strong network of African serving organizations in the United States. The objectives of the conference were:
- To engage in a roundtable discussion regarding the needs of African communities in the Greater Minneapolis – St. Paul area; and opportunities for building strategic alliances to address these needs;
- To stimulate a discussion on self-help, community organizing and other strategies for social change;
- To empower and promote the African community’s participation in economic, social, and civic affairs of the United States.
Expected outcomes of the conference :
- To produce a “Directory of African Serving Organizations in the Greater Minneapolis-St. Paul Area” that will catalogue services and resources that are provided by African organizations and other entities for African communities and;
- To develop an Organizational Development and Community Organizing Program for African-serving groups in the Greater Minneapolis-St. Paul Area. African serving organization leaders met and networked with other
African leaders throughout the state. In addition, they learned about efforts to build a unified and vibrant African community in the Greater Minneapolis-St. Paul Area and, through the African Federation, Inc. A report on the conference will be posted shortly on the website.
